It seems like most cities around the world are located on river or some large body of water. However, there are some cities that do not have this sort of setting. So, name a city (small, medium-sized or large) or so across the world that is not located on a river (especially major rivers) or large body of water.
-Atlanta, Georgia - not true - Chattahoochee River and downstream of Lake Lanier
-Las Vegas, Nevada - not true - adjacent to Lake Mead
Yes, the Chattahoochee River hugs Atlanta's western border, however, it the city does not have a river or large body water that runs directly through its core. As for Vegas, the same is true.
If I'm not mistaken........Tehran, Kabul, Johannesburg, Brasilia?, Bogota, Ankara, Delhi?, Moscow?, Chonqing?, Milan?, Birmingham UK?, Nairobi? Harare?
In North America: Mexico City, Indianapolis (was built from scratch to be at the exact center of the new state), Denver (a very small river), Dallas (a small river), Phoenix, Tucson, Calgary, Fairbanks, Birmingham
I think that Moskva river flows through the Moscow, and Yamuna through Delhi.
Jialing flows through Chongqing.
Birmingham UK is crossed by Britain's main north-south watershed between the basins of the Rivers Severn and Trent.
Nairobi river flows through Nairobi.
Elbow river in Calgary.
Chena river in Fairbanks.
I agree with the rest
Define close proximity... I don't think Sao Paulo is close to a large body of water... It is about an hour west from the coast... I suppose that is close, but they dont have any coast within the city limits or large rivers or lakes running through the city... I think they have canals but those are man made... But again I'm not positive and would stand corrected...

Actually runs through the core or city center.
