What are some of the most culturally unique places on earth? I'm mostly thinking about villages and tribes, but feel free to list regions or other areas as well.

I'll put a vote down for the Republic of Kalmykia. It's a chess obsessed state of ethnic mongolian Buddhists. And It's in Europe.

What are some of your picks and why?

In the Lugu Lake region, in the highlands of China, marriage among the Na people is unknown and paternity is not formalized. Conception occurs in casual encounters, and children are raised by the mother's family.

Ganvie, in Benin, is a city of 20,000, in which there is not a single building built on the ground. It consists entirely of lake houses, built on stilts.
