People are confused by the influence of Arab culture (through the expansion of Islam) in Iran.
Iranians and Pakistanis are definitively not Arab in language or genetics. That would be like calling Koreans 'European' because a lot of them are Methodists.
Iranians are more closely related to Europeans than Arabs.

I don't think its to that extreme as your post says but anyway, the nationalities that first come to mind is to me is Syrians and Saudi Arabians.

Although I find your comparison about calling Koreans Europeans a tad far-fetched, I agree with what you say. Both Iranians and Pakistani speak Indo-European languages and share common ancestry with Europeans.
Personally, I always think about Moroccans when I think of an Arab. I know it's not correct, as most Moroccans are Berbers. But since they're so many in Belgium, that's what I first picture when hearing of an Arab.

It was a qualitative comparison. That is:
If someone is of religion 'x', then they are most likely from genepool 'y' (=False)
-not-
Iranians are as distantly related to Arabs : Koreans are as distantly related to Europeans.
Was there not a lot of Iranian mixing with the Pakistanis? Because the Pakistanis and Indians look very different.
India covers a pretty wide range of appearances. Those in northern/western India would look not as different from those across the border in Pakistan, while more southern Indians would look more different.
One thing though that is that Pakistan's identity, as an identity means that it more often than not defines itself in contrast to India, it's enemy so that it will look towards the Middle East (I think this trend is continuing as Pakistan emphasizes its Muslim identity over it's geographical one) and away from India to try and create a cultural identity for itself, even though its roots with the Indian subcontinent still run beneath (For instance, Pakistanis often like watching the same Bollywood movies as India, and Hindi in India and Urdu in Pakistan being almost the same spoken language except Urdu is written in an Arabic script).
I can't really speak for them, but although I live in an area where there are a lot of immigrants from Indian/Pakistani background and have a few old classmates from there, so it might just be my perception.
People from the Middle East such as Arabs and Iranians ironically will often see Pakistanis are not being one of them, and see them as South Asians just like Indians or Sri Lankans.

how can you say that? until 15 August 1947 they were the same country.
My Pakistani friends can understand hindi and vice-versa.
They do not seem distinct visually, IMO.
With regard to the original poster's question, I just think of the Arabian peninsula pretty broadly and the countries on it because of the word association of "Arabia".
