My wife and I would like to move out of the country, with our two kids (both under 4) to ether Europe or South AMerica.

Ideally we like spending summers in the greek Islands and Turkey and winters somewhere else, ideally in the tropics.

My wife is from South America and but misses the friendliness and fun found in so many places in South America. ( we are living in the North East). She misses friendly smiles, fun, interesting conversations, and having parties without worrying about binge drinking, yelling, fighting, and the wild "woo hoo" stuff.

She came to America because of freedom, but she is finding it more like her country everyday. And at least in her country she was able to real fun, unlike here with so many government and social restrictions. And she had lower taxes in her country.

So, if we are to live in a socialist state or a place where by other people have rights over other people money, why not move to some place that is actually fun to live in.

Why not move to a place where kids can be kids and enjoy themselves without getting arrested for minor mistake or rumors. After all how can one learn from a life lesson with this being the case.

SO, we are looking at moving.

I am self employed and have the residual income to make a move anywhere in the world but I would like to live somewhere where the cost of living is lower. You need to earn over $100,000 just to have some disposable income after things like payroll and property taxes. However, I do need a fast internet connection.

Ideally we like the fun lifestyle of the Brazilians but we also like the culture found in Europe, especially Italy. We would still like to spend summers in greece and turkey. We like going out to restaurants, meeting interesting people with interesting stories, having a nice wine, fresh food, sun, going skinny dipping, and international traveling.

Any suggestions?

I agree that the period of "American" (i.e. US) exceptionalism in world history is over. So now, for those who can, choosing a country is a matter of cultural preference.

In this case, ideal would be if your wife is from northern South America (at least mild climate all year round, if not tropical), with citizenship, where you could set up a base. Then spend no more than three months of the year, to avoid visa problems, in the Mediterranean countries that you mentioned.

If further south in South America, then you may have to deal with a few months of cold/frigid weather. Many parts of the Mediterranean can be very cold or near frigid in the winter months.

One or both of you may also have ancestral ties to a European country and possibly a right to citizenship. Otherwise achieving permanent residency in an EU country is increasingly difficult, not sure about Turkey. Of course with money, you can buy your way into anything, but it seems that you are seeking low-cost solutions.

Not sure about Turkey, but by now in most areas of South America, Italy and Greece you can have access to a fast landline and/or mobile internet connection; even if you have to pay a premium rate, it is probably worth it.

Of course, a major concern going forward has to be education of the children. In most cases, high quality international schools are expensive and located in major cities where the cost of living is high and the quality of life low, unless you can afford the best of the best. In the model that you are devising, then, it will require creative, out-of-the-box solutions and/or compromises.

Good Luck!

Maybe just get out of the northeast if neither you or your wife like it.

Sounds like if you want greece and turkey vacations and international travel than europe is better for both. If you want Latin america in Europe, than Italy, as you mentioned, sounds good.

Sounds like your wife is from Brazil? If so, I'd scratch off the other countries, and just focus on brazil. Personally, for fun-loving, nowhere else in South America, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter, come close.

Yes, stay in the U.S. If you consider it a "socialist" country, it sounds like you would have major problems in many other parts of the world.

Geezus, if I had to live in the northeast, I'd want to poke my own eye out, too.

Consider moving south or southwest?

Good life, low COL, friendly people, safe neighborhoods, low taxes...

Just do not move into my neighbourhood with those kinds of expectations ....

I am really interested, in why
"friendly smiles, fun, interesting conversations, and having parties"
have to include
"binge drinking, yelling, fighting, and the wild "woo hoo" stuff" ???
Or ... Am I misunderstanding you ?

I could be wrong in this interpretation...but I interpreted his meaning...in that:

Latin Countries...like France, Italy, Spain, etc. People don't drink to get drunk. They just drink socially over the meals, and you seldom see people drunk out of their mind.

In contrast to the UK/England...who is famous for getting drunk to get drunk out of your mind.

I don't know where the OP is at in the Northeast...but I get the impression that wherever he's at, people binge drink and get rowdy.

I'm sure the OP will come back and clarify though....hopefully!

I hope so (that I interpreted him wrong ...) too.

France is a latin country?

Btw, I've been all over europe and all kinds of people have all kinds of drinking habits.

I think the big difference is that you can't drink and drive in those countries. So people are a lot more careful in public. But they still do get wasted.

The only people I see staggering around the streets in a drunken stupor are tourists....usually British. In pretty much all of Europe you can get a drink any time of the day so people moderate their drinking...there is no rush to 'fill up' before closing time.
