The reappearance of Saif Gadhafi in Tripoli after reportedly being captured (and the escape of Mohammed Gadhafi from rebel capture), seems to have caused confusion in the ranks of the rebels according to reporters on the scene. Questions are being raised about the extent of rebel control in Tripoli, and whether the reports of the rebel authority, the NTC, are accurate or overly enthusiastic.
On the other hand, internet service has returned to parts of Tripoli after being blacked out for months. This would indicate that the Gadhafi government has lost control of significant areas of the city.
12:30 GMT. Aljazeera reports:
"Libyan rebels have reportedly entered the fortified compound of leader Muammar Gaddafi in Bab al-Azizya in Tripoli, amid intensified fighting with regime forces.
"According to reports that could not be independently verified, rebels have entered the compound at least through one gate.
"It is very clear that there is a major battle raging within that compound," Al Jazeera's James Bays said, reporting from Tripoli.
What the hell has happened to reporting and journalism? US news media coverage of Libya looks like the New York Times sports page following the Yankees through the playoffs.
Does the news media have any other function than to choose a favorite and then be cheerleaders?
19:00 GMT. At the present time the Gadhafi compound is being looted by rebel soldier and civilians. No members of the Gadhafi family have been located. It is being conjectured that they are likely to have fled south with an entourage. The southern part of the city of Tripoli is still the scene of fighting.
And now the battle between the rival rebel factions shall begin. All they have done is rid Libya of its tyrant. The matter of control is still unsettled.
