Bombed out feel, ethnic/relgious strife, and in a country invaded by a foreign power? Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Beautiful city with amazing culture, people, food, weather and natural surroundings. Too bad for the constant war.

I would say its a mix of a bunch of cities... like someone said above, Athens, Naples, Paris, Rio de Janeiro minus the danger... It's hard to say, it's a unique city.

For strictly nightlife, I would say Barcelona, Rio, Miami, Athens just because of the environment.

Don't they call Beirut "Paris of the Middle East"?

Well, therein lies your answer.

If Paris is the closest correspondent in Europe, try Montreal in the Americas, at least north America, basically an island in the middle of the St. Laurence river: French-speaking obviously, English too of course, great restaurants for sure, not sure about the rest of the nightlife because I am an old fart and don't care but I assume that it is good, and when I was there plenty of fun-loving, but also business-savvy, Lebanese, most of them very fine people.

At the time at least, the policy was that if you have skills and money to contribute, Canada and Quebec put you on a fast track for immigration, not sure if that is still the policy today.

The big negative is freezing temperatures for many months of the year, but there are ways to overcome that too.

Good Luck!

I've been to Montreal a number of times but I don't think it really compares to the nightlife and lifestyle in Beirut. I honestly didn't find that city to be a big deal like everyone says it is. Yes they have a large Lebanese population but ehhhhh....it was iight. Thanks for the answers though!
