So lets say you bought a 40 foot sailboat yacht and were going to sail off to the South Pacific. What island there would you want to visit the most? I had this fantasy ever since I was a teenager.

Where, praytell, is Figi? I have a couple of good mapbooks, and access to the internet (eh?), but cannot for the life of me find Figi!
The Marquesas islands are pretty nice.

I've heard the Cook Islands are nice. Vanuatu is fairly poor, but is said to have one of the happiest populations on Earth. In terms of development Tonga looks to be the tops among South Pacific nations, although I'd imagine the Cook Islands are more developed. They might not be listed because they're still associated to New Zealand. In terms of freedom Samoa might rank highest among independent South Pacific nations.

I haven't traveled enough to really judge though.

I'd probably check out Fiji...only because it seems to have the larger population center than any other....
My feeling is that islands start to all look alike after awhile....

For me, the only islands worth considering are those that have a mountain in the middle. Those flat islands with just palm trees are kind of boring after maybe 20 minutes.
In Malaysia, Tioman and Langkawi are both big enough and mountainous to be interesting.
