In Malaysia the government supports local bands so that the youth have an alternative to the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvviiiiiillllll western music. It doesn't work. Talent should rise to the top on its own merit, and when the government gets involved mostly cr@p (i.e., politically-connected) rises to the top. This is the case. An album is considered a hit if it sells 5,000 copies. (And, yes, there are some large extended family/kinship groups!)

Still, there have been a few (very few) Malaysian acts that are worth checking out.
Sheila Majid
Amy Mastura
M. Nasir
Amelina (Malaysian version of Indonesian dangdut style)
Mas Idayu (dangdut)

The best singers and bands using the Malay language come from Indonesia where a larger music scene, and lack of government support, means that talent truly gets to rule.

I loved the reggae from Papua New Guinea!

Telek and O-Shen are now in my playlist!

I'm a little suspect because I'm a reggae fan, but I found them fantastic!
