Amsterdam has legalized prostitution, but it's a highly sterile environment. Probably better than a crack-addicted street hooker in the U.S. But, go to any other country in the world, and you'll see countless upon countless 'freelancers' and every other type.

In short, Amsterdam might appeal to Americans. But, you'll probably never find anyone in Southeast Asia or South America flying to Amsterdam to have a good time. Well, you might, but you wouldn't see them go there a second time.
One of the funniest stories I have heard was from one of my students whose co-worker (Brazilian) went to Amsterdam and got a hooker. He was a little disappointed to say the least.

These days, EVERY major city in the world seems like sin city. I live in Washington, DC and believe me it is no less sinful than Vegas or Amsterdam. Everything happens, even in high places here, but it's just underground.

No big city is sacred anymore.

Southeast Asia. Anything you can do in Vegas or Europe, you can do it there and cheaper. In Vang Vien, Laos , you can enjoy shrooms and other hallucinogenic drugs. Crystal meth is so easy to buy in Manila. Illegal drag racings and other stuffs. And ofcourse the prostitution. You can have as young as a 12 or 13 year old if that's your type.
In the roughest place, you can do whatever you want if you have money coz they're desperate for it.

Never been to Bangkok, so that might be worse, but my trips (about 5) to Tijuana turned my stomache at times. Those live women and animal shows, easy access to drugs, drug related deaths, selling of nearly anything you can think of, and general dangerous-ness made it a place I no longer have any interest in ever visiting again.

Meh, Amsterdam isn't as free as it used to be. Foreigners can't even buy weed legally there anymore.

America's 'sin cities' are sort of sanitized compared to SE Asia. Prostitution, for instance, seems more frowned upon/look down upon in the US than in other Western nations and other countries. In fact while prostitution is technically illegal in Thailand everyone turns a blind eye. I read that 95% of Thai men have been with a prostitute, including many policeman and prominent politicians. Apparently it's been part of Thai culture for generations, although not to the extent that we've seen in the past few years, especially the catering to Western sex-tourists. I think prostitution isn't such a big deal in Europe and among Europeans in general as well. Europeans have pretty liberal attitudes towards sex.

Same in most of Pacific Asia - Japan, Korea, China, etc.

I've heard that many Japanese wifes pack condoms when their men go on business trips. They just assume whe husbands are going to have a prostitute. In Korea, when the wife is pregnant, and the husband isn't allowed to have sex the wife, they again assume the man will get a prostitute or mistress during that time. Latin countries are also filled with mistresses, let alone prostitutes.

In the U.S., any thought of a husband ever even considering a prostitute or mistress, let alone actually doing it, is automatic grounds for a very nasty divorce proceedings.

As a personal aside, I kinda think the reason the U.S. has so many bizarre child molestations and child kidnappings and every other strange heinous crime, could partially because there are no sexual release available for ugly or unwanted men. If they had some release, maybe they wouldn't hunt down vulnerable kids, people's wifes and girlfriends, next door neighbors, and all the rest. It's unfortunate, but not every ugly and unwanted man can find a wife to have sex with for life. Society needs some kind of outlet so their minds don't become too warped and take it out on the general public.

Yeah that's exactly the reasoning for the Asian attitude towards extra-marital sex. I think a lot of ugly men aren't only out for sex but want love/a relationship, which is why a lot of men from Europe, North America and Australia go there, fall in with a Thai lady, and things sometimes get complicated. For a country seemingly so saturated with sexual suggestiveness I was surprised at the rather restrictive laws regarding sex in the US. Not that I'm advocating prostitution, but even a 'massage with a happy ending' is illegal in most states.
