Just a fun poll. What do you think is the world's ultimate "sin city", the ultimate place of vice and illicit pleasures (or darker stuff?)

I know Las Vegas is coloquially known as Sin City but its not really that "sinful" even compared to some other American cities, after all its just gambling and prositution is actually not legal there and even my local city, Baltimore is crazier when it comes to strip clubs. But I guess all this in the US can pale in comparison to the rest of the world.

Bangkok is #1.

Nowhere else compares.

I put Amsterdam as well. I thought of this poll since one of my friends is going to Europe this summer and specifically mentioned Amsterdam and the first things that came to mind was smoking weed, followed by finding prostitutes. Hence is Amsterdam's reputation. I think again the legalized, marketed, and encouraged nature of drug use, weed smoking, prostitution, and stripping. I dont think any other city in the world markets itself in this way or is that comfortable with its reputation.

Now with the other cities here all have something to go for them too mostly. I had Las Vegas and Miami and LA because they are sometimes mentioned but honestly these are all overrated especially Las Vegas. I have been there 3 times and it is a normal city with suburbs just with some resorts downtown filled with middle aged folks from Dallas or Kansas City or Nashville out to party it up and its not even as wild as Miami. New Orleans has a reputaiton with legal open carry laws, mardi gras, strip clubs, and the legends of voodoo, sorcery, and black magic. However the rest of Louisiana including the outskirts of New Orleans is still the Bible Belt with conservative American and Southern values.

Cancun and Tijuana are famous for Americans going there doing things and acting in ways that will never be tolerated in Vegas or Miami same with other spring break destinations. Tijuana is also known worldwide as a lawless land of drug cartels, smuggling, illegal immigration, mercenaries and corrupt police. Monte Carlo gives a feeling of wealth and corruption, and shady businesses and international robber barons. Bangkok is also known for its prostitution, including child prostitution and porn and is a common sex tourism destination for foreigners.

It's a highly overrated experience.

A person can find weed in a manner of hours, in almost ANY location anywhere in the United States. The novelty of smoking weed in a bar, wears thin quickly.

Amsterdam has legalized prostitution, but it's a highly sterile environment. Probably better than a crack-addicted street hooker in the U.S. But, go to any other country in the world, and you'll see countless upon countless 'freelancers' and every other type.

In short, Amsterdam might appeal to Americans. But, you'll probably never find anyone in Southeast Asia or South America flying to Amsterdam to have a good time. Well, you might, but you wouldn't see them go there a second time.

From the ones listed Bangkok , from a puerly "sin" perspective Phnom Penh would be the ultimate sin city destination ive experienced.

Ive never being to any of the cities listed on the american continents or Moscow however.

I've been to most of these. My experiences:

Las Vegas, Nevada - Same as anywhere, you can find prostitutes and drugs anywhere. However, you also have a ton of casinos and a few other variations - quick marriages and divorces. 24 hour nightlife which is RARE for the U.S. Common elsewhere, but rare in the U.S., which makes it seem more fun.

Los Angeles/Beverly Hills/Hollywood ,California - Sure, you can find drugs and prostitutes like anywhere in the world. But, outside of that, I think it's just super expensive nightclubs you can stand around in.

South Florida (incl. Miami and Key West) - again prostitutes and drugs like everywhere in the world. What probably makes South Florida more fun than most U.S. destinations is that there is a large number of Cubans and Brazilians and South Americans here. Brazil and South America is a million times more fun than anywhere in the U.S., so a city that has a high population of them, will make it more fun. (That being said, I'd had a lot more fun in Brazil itself).

New Orleans, Louisiana - like Vegas, you actually have 24 hours drinking available. A true rarity in the U.S. You also have a dense city (another rarity in the U.S.). So, you can walk around and socialize and drink and meet people. An amazing city by American standards. By world standards, it's still in the U.S., and not going to nearly as fun as when you go abroad. It's basically a taste of Spain, or something. Sure, it's great to drink and walk in the street. But people many people do that absolutely everywhere outside of the U.S. It's actually a typical weekend in any Asian city.

San Francisco, California - only fun if you are gay or very gay friendly (i.e. for women who want to have fun in a fun social scene). I lived in SF for a year, and if you aren't gay, you get either a yuppie social scene or a hippie drug scene. If a person finds yuppies fun, than SF would be great. If you feel you need to be in a large community of drug-users, than SF is good for that too. (Like anywhere, you can find drugs anywhere else as well, not a big draw. If you don't use drugs like me, than it's equally irrelevant).

Tijuana, Mexico - This gives Americans a taste of the freedoms and choices available outside of it's borders. However, it's a bit edgy and dangerous. I've been there about ten times, and I kinda liked it, and kinda didn't. I liked it because it's close to the U.S., and yet not in the U.S., so you have less restrictions. I didn't like that most Americans ONLY go there for drugs and sex. (I went there for good Mexican food, to practice Spanish, and to hangout with the Middle Class Mexicans, whereas most Americans go for the vices).

Cancun, Mexico - I went here as well. It's mostly just young Americans drinking beer and excited because it's 24 hours. Because of it, some of the Americans think its amazing to be able to drink beer at a beach. Hey, that's normal for 90% of the world. So, by American standards, it's fun. Not interesting at all by world standards. Unless a person enjoys drinking beer with a bunch of Americans at the beach. (I'd rather go to any other beach in the world, and drink with fewer young Americans everywhere).

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Well, like anywhere else, you can find drugs (not that I'd go anywhere for that). Probably what makes RIO a lot more fun, is that you can drink beer and go to the beach with BRAZILIAN people. They sell beer on the beach. Be careful, as a gazillion 'freelancer' women everywhere, who'll charge you a little bit of money, to party, drink, and go home with you. You think you're just having a lot of fun, and mr. handsome, but you'll wake up and they'll ask for 'taxi money' to get home. (If that's fun, than welcome to the rest of the world. Brazil has some of the world's most attractive people, so enjoy).

Amsterdam, Netherlands - only fun if you want sterile paid-for sex by sterile uninterested women. You can also legally smoke pot in a cafe. If those are the top of a person's list for fun activities, you'll be in heaven. (Personally I don't think either is all that interesting).

Paris, France - Never heard of this being 'sin city'. More of a cultural refined capital. If 'culture' is considered 'sinful'...i.e. art, models, etc. Than I suppose Paris might be riskee for someone.

Monte Carlo, Monaco - This is one of two places on the list I've never been. I think it's predominately a place for the rich of the rich to live, and not pay taxes. I can't imagine it being that much fun.

Moscow, Russia - I've never been to Moscow, but I have been to Russia. If a person is into Russian prostitutes, than maybe some draw. But, if that's a person's thing, you'll find Russian prostitutes everywhere - Bangkok, Mumbai, Seoul, Tokyo, Greece, etc. Other than that, you're just paying extremely exhorbant disco prices, and be dealing with a ton of Russian mafia types looking at you strangely. At least in Vladivostok, most clubs are mafia guys wining and dining Russian woman. Not exactly 'pick-up' scenes, IF that is what a person is looking for. But Moscow is one of the two on this long list I haven't been, so I could be wrong.

Macau, China - Mostly a city of casinos. Sure, like ANYWHERE in the world, there will be some freelancers and women available. Not really that interesting. I really liked it because of it's Portuguese flavour mixed with Chinese. But, I wouldn't go here for a serious bender of 'sin'.

Bangkok, Thailand - just about every vice imaginable on this earth is available here. For the person who thought it was mostly just underraged girls, that's mostly been cleaned up, and they search down people to prosecute them. That's also the case in most of Southeast Asia these days. I can't think of a single Asian country that allows that to legally happen. But, everything else is there, and prostitution with consenting Thai adults is almost as common as ordering a mcdonalds hamburger off an American interstate. Like everywhere else, it's easy to find drugs. Basically not only does it have every vice everywhere, it also has a great selection of international food, low prices, and culture galore.

Other - Manila, Jakarta, Phnom Pehn, Fortaleza, Salvador, Recife, etc.

Actually, it's more difficult to find places where sex and drugs are nowhere to be found.

Wow Tiger Bear you've really been to a LOT of places! When I meant Sin City I just meant more of the vices and the air of permissiveness. I just think Amsterdam has that kind of reputation. I don't think gambling is that big of a deal and its not as big of a "vice" as prostitution or drugs. There are casinos all over the US now.

With Beverly Hills/Hollywood, its just the Hollywood scene with all those scandals, affairs, drugs, etc with that crowd that gives that image.

@ Tiger Beer : 100% right about Amsterdam, but I believe Berlin, while in the same league, must be better.
I believe also that Manila is as "sinful" as Bangkok (seemed to me anyway when I visited 25 years ago)
I wonder why the OP did not add Pattaya on the list (or maybe he meant P with Bangkok, both cities being close).

Vegas seems almost family-friendly in many ways, feels more like Disneyland than a true 'city of sin.' As the OP said prostitution isn't even legal on the Strip itself, but as far as actually vices it seems mostly gambling and hype.

I actually thought to myself that 'New Orleans is the real sin city' even though it's not that bad. It has an 'anything goes' attitude while Vegas is so glitzy. Mostly it's just partying and having a good time, but those 'simulated sex shows' with graphic photos outside, sleazy bars and amount of crime give it a few points.

Bangkok isn't as crazy as one would expect in most parts, actually, the main sex-tourism districts are confined to a few areas. Compared to other Asian cities prostitution etc is a lot more visible, but if you want hookers it's just as easy to find them in Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh. Manila is probably comparable. The nightlife in Patong Beach, Phuket seemed to revolve a lot around go-go bars and massage parlours. Find me one that doesn't at least offer a happy ending, if not more.
