When i made the poll i was think most of you all would choose states with high immigration, like Florida, California, and New York but places like Louisiana and Maine which have unique cultures and New Mexico for its high Hispanic influence.

Its pretty much like Louisiana then. Its has its own languages and there are Cajuns and Creoles.

I think Hawaii is the most unique U.S. as a whole being a tropical Pacific island with Polynesian and Japanese influences and a large native Hawaiian population. Massachusetts is also very different from the rest of the country, and California too with its values.

Parts of Florida, Texas, New Mexico, and California feel more Latin American than American.

How is Massachusetts different?

"Most unique" made me grind my teeth, but I'll live. Bad English there. Maybe you were looking for "distinct". Ahem.

Anyway. I said Louisiana for reasons others gave. It has a language and history and geography distinctly different from the other states. While the other choices each have something distinct about them, it's not as encompassing as Louisiana. For example, New York has the country's largest city, yes, but the rest of it is mostly the same farmland sprinkled with smaller cities that you see in a dozen other states. Florida's also different what with the subtropical climate and the Florida Scrub biological area in the middle, where there are plants and animals found nowhere else, but it doesn't have a distinct language/culture of its own except in a couple of isolated spots like Miami.

Yeah, I'm kind of interested in hearing the answer to this one, too.

If Massachusetts is different, then hell, so is New Jersey.

Were Hawaii an option, it'd likely be ahead of everywhere else. It has its own native language with nearly thousand years of history and independent development along with an indigenous culture to go along with it as well as a fairly recent history of being its own country. Added to that is a climate with native flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth due to its fairly extreme isolation. On top of that you have a rich latter day mixing of cultures with the native Hawaiians, Filipinos, Japanese, Portuguese, Puerto Ricans, Chinese, and mainland US Americans creating an incredibly diverse culture with its own unique cuisine, culture, slang, and music.
