Southampton and Plymouth are the largest cities on the south coast, though Southampton is about 10 miles from open sea.

Bristol has coastal suburbs, a port, and a metro population of 1m.

Southampton and Plymouth are ports more than 'seaside towns' Brighton is a resort more like Blackpool, Bournemouth, Skegness or Bognor Regis.

Italy, being a peninsula, has many coastal cities:

- Naples on the Tyrrhenian Coast with a metropolitan areas beteen 3 and 4,5 millions according to various sources
- Genoa on the Ligurian Coast with a metropolitan area of 1 million
- Venice on the Adriatic Coast with a metropolitan area of 1,5 million
- while technically its city center isn't on the sea, there are several neighbourhoods of Rome who are on the Tyrrhenian Coast. The city has a metropolitan area of 4 millions
- Bari is on the Adriatic Coast and has a metropolitan area of 1,4 millions
- Palermo is on the Tyrrhenian Coast and has a metropolitan area of 1 million
- Catania is on the Ionian Coast and has a metropolitan area of 1,2 million
- There are other sizable cities along the coast like Livorno, Salerno, Rimini, Messina, Reggio Calabria, Taranto and Trieste but none of them has a metropolitan area of 1 million or more

No that i think about it, the only major cities which aren't on the coast are Milan, Bologna, Turin and Florence

^^^^^^

Rome is close to a sea, but is not a coastal city. The others I agree. Question, are Athens and Thesakoniki city ports?

Venice metro doesn't have 1.5 million people, 1 million max.

Metro's of Genoa and Catania have 800k-900k people.

In France there is just Marseille, pop. 852,516 (metro area pop. 1 727 070 -- in 2012 ). The others are too small.

Of Canada's 47 largest municipalities, only two (Vancouver and Halifax) are on the coast. Yet Canada has by far the world's longest coastline. Canada has 1/6 of the entire world's coastline.

Not really coastal, city centre is 12 km by road from the coast.
