If we include places that lack permanent population
Bouvet Island - Most remote island in the world, closest land mass is in Antarctica and over a 1000 miles away. Some Norwegian scientists go there.
Kerguelen Islands - I'm not sure it's more remote than some I named, but it's pretty remote. It's French and it claims the base has "a hospital, restaurant, library, sports center, cinema and chapel."
Papua New Guinea? why has that had a few mentions?
There are far more isolated places. PNG is close to Australia and many pacific islands and lessor extent Asia.
Agree with some of the other mentions in the thread.
I know, Papua New Guinea has a population of 6,187,591 and is close to some very populated countries to the north and Australia to the south. I would agree with Pitcarian Islands, places are more remote if people actually live there otherwise it is just a remote rock not a settlement.
Perth is very remote as far as cities go (>1 million people).
It is closer to Jakarta, Indonesia than most Australian cities, and almost 3000K's from Adelaide, South Australia.
