I would love to stop somewhere poor this summer and volunteer for at least a week but I don't want to pay 2,000 dollars or anything to do so. Why should I have to pay to give my services? Anybody know how to volunteer for free? It seems odd that that question has to be asked.
Get involved in a church..they volunteer all the time, and I don't think it will cost anywhere near $2000...
While I don't attend church and am not at all religious, many churches DO do good things abroad...so talk to some and give it a try! Also, try the Red Cross, Salvation Army...all of those groups may have ideas for you!

I'm sure you could find somewhere to volunteer when you're traveling. The reason that those places charge you money to go is because they provide you with a place to stay, food and insurance/medical coverage if you get sick. They have to stay afloat somehow, and if they just gave all those things out to every volunteer, every freeloader in the world would come and they'd be broke in a heartbeat....
