I said Canada. I would have said Australia but I find its culture a bit backwards, though not as much so as the US. I would pick a small country in Europe but it seems more fair to pick a larger country, plus Europe is kind of getting worse too.

Do you mean the most advanced economically, or industrially, or technologically, or scientifically, or philosophically, or intellectually, or artistically, or socially, or ethically, or governmentally, or educationally, or militarily, or infrastructurally,or medically, or nutritionally, or agriculturally, or spiritually, or what? If you mean all of them together, are they to be weighted equally? How do we know if "advanced" is a positive direction, if what lies ahead is fraught with peril?

Depends on on what specific criteria. No nation leads in ALL the criteria you mention, obviously.

For instance, while the US is ahead in a lot of technology, in terms of actual implementation I'd say countries like China are ahead on it. Most of the Chinese population, however, is behind the American population.

Socially, I would say the European nations, although it's sort of a matter of perspective as well. Being progressive might not be viewed as 'advanced' by everybody. In this regard, nations like Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany.etc lead.

I'd say Norway over Finland, but they're close!
I agree with Japan.

50 years ago, the US could have made the list.
If not for jingoism, it wouldn't be rated so high on the list.

Darn US. First the Transistor, then the Integrated Circuit and the Microprocessor and before long - Bam! - The Personal Computer and finally the Internet. Now we ALL are forced to put up with their "jingoism"!

Yes, thanks for the list. All of these factors together are important in making a determination - plus any others I mentioned in the OP. I'll leave it to others to decide how much weight to give to each factor.

That's a good question, although probably for another thread.

I chose the USA. I think the USA does a good job of being technologically advanced, especially considered its heterogeneous population and varied landscape. I agree that the other nations, like Japan, Germany, the Scandinavian countries, do well also, but frankly, for its sheer size and diversity, the USA does exceptionally well.

I think the countries should have been ranked alphabetically in the poll. It is a proven fact that random ranking of the alternatives has an affect on the results or in other words, the results can be manipulated by placing certain countries more visible.

Japan is high in the technique, but environment is bad.
Because it is stress society, there are many suicides.
The economy moves to the warm country.
