We all know that different nations excel at different qualities. But which nation would you choose as being the most advanced in the world based on a wide range of criteria - including social, political, economic, scientific, cultural, esthetic and other qualities?
Select as many nations as you like which fit the bill. Please explain your choices.
Having lived in both, I'd definitely say the same.
The U.S. is way behind the two of them. U.S. equates technology with military. You don't really see it in the public sphere much at all.
In Japan, one is routinely surprised.
I'd have to agree with you as far as the US is concerned. Although we are at least 10 years ahead of every other country militarily, we lag behind many countries as far as infrastructure and the availability of healthcare, as well as other things. It's pretty aggravating, considering how the US has the potential to completely reenergize its infrastructure, if we could just stop the "every man for himself" mantra
I will say though that considering Japan's upcoming demographic crapstorm, I think that S Korea has it beat in the long run.
Do you mean the most advanced economically, or industrially, or technologically, or scientifically, or philosophically, or intellectually, or artistically, or socially, or ethically, or governmentally, or educationally, or militarily, or infrastructurally,or medically, or nutritionally, or agriculturally, or spiritually, or what? If you mean all of them together, are they to be weighted equally? How do we know if "advanced" is a positive direction, if what lies ahead is fraught with peril?
Thanks for beating me to the punch with this post.... I was just about to say this...
Darn US. First the Transistor, then the Integrated Circuit and the Microprocessor and before long - Bam! - The Personal Computer and finally the Internet. Now we ALL are forced to put up with their "jingoism"!

Do you feel other nations like the UAE and China are fast catching up/superseding Japan? For instance China has the world's first operational mag-lev service, something I don't think Japan has. Japan has been in economic recession in 20 years so I wonder if it will remain at the forefront of technological advancement and innovation.
I'd say Canada right now in terms of what average people experience. Japan if you're just considering Tokyo. The US feels like it's decaying. Compare public transit in the US' shining city, NYC, to that of any other highly developed country's star city. In terms of companies and gadgets, definitely the US, but those products get exported globally and Americans keep getting poorer, or can't even find work, so fewer of them, percentage-wise, may be able to appreciate that new technology compared to people in some other countries.
