China's a cesspool. The rural areas (most of the country) are extremely underdeveloped. I agree with you on Japan, though. I was torn between voting for Japan and voting for Switzerland.

By "advanced" I would want to factor in a certain enlightenment on top of the technical and functional aspects.
The US is out of contention with half the population being willfully ignorant and having little interest in sustainable living. Japan is out because they are socially quite miserable and have big demographic problems for the future. Scandinavia lacks a certain sophistication of people and its role in the world is as more of a backwater. The Netherlands is disappointing itself lately with infighting, and its small size hurts in some ways.
So, I'd offer France and Germany as the most advanced nations in the world.

They've handled the nuclear disaster terribly (including the corruption that allowed for such a situation to occur in the first place). It's still on the verge of catastrophe. ENENews.com – Energy News

This. Voted for Japan. I'm sure there are some biased Americans on here who picked the USA.
To correct you though, Japan is not a western country. Western countries consist of the nations of Western Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and perhaps the nations of Latin America.
