But Geggo, haven't you heard the slogan, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns"? You need a gun to protect yourself from criminals who illegally acquire guns. Black market guns. So to combat this black market, guns need to be legalized so that all citizens can carry guns, just in case someday a criminal with a gun might threaten them when they're out at night, or if someone tries to break into their home. You wouldn't believe the vehemence with which some Americans defend this belief.

On the other hand, the Constitution of European countries probably doesn't say anything about citizens having the right to bear arms, so the question doesn't even come up.

They love to cite some bull**** that claims like 10-fold assault rate decrease in nations that allowed personal guns.

Somebody launches Gebbels-style propaganda and some others spread it.

Russia does not allow legal pritvate ownership of Hunting rifles or Shotguns? or are we talking hi-capacity handguns and assault rifles?

Russia allows hunting rifles. We're talking about handguns.

True freedom means being able to own whatever you want.

Guns, tigers, plastic blow-up dolls, etc.

So, making handguns legal only ups the ante. Outlaws then will have submachine guns. Good to know.

That might actually be a rationale fear within the United States because unlike countries with more entrenched social democratic ideologies the United States' has allowed a mix of almost inescapable urban poverty to mix with a consumerist 'get rich or die trying' ethos which means that there is legitimately alot of violent criminals to be afraid of. Plus, unlike the countries where guns aren't popular, the United States is awash in millions upon millions of guns which won't suddenly disappear if the laws change, and all of these already manufactured guns mean there probably would be an easy supply for the black market. Thus, this different history means the situation might not be ridiculous. America might not be able to alleviate these fears without several decades of social spending and a complete reform of the justice system.

There's never been a "get rich or die trying" ethos in the US. There has been a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" ethos. A study hard to get ahead ethos. But this is a subject for a different thread.
