Yeah NYC is "extremely depressive and dark-colored and dirty".... Please don't come here again.
You must be a jealous troll.

Moscow is among the dirtiest cities I've been too, as well as extremely cold almost year-round along with drunk Russians where the life expectancy is very short.
I have been to Moscow and NYC and I must say Moscow seems cleaner.

Do you have to get pissy whenever someone points out a flaw in American cities? You seem to have this complex throughout this entire thread of American acceptionalism. NYC is dirty, I have been there twice a year for the past 3 years, all boroughs. Some parts are nicer than others but on the whole the city is fairly dirty.

Deal. With. It.

BTW, every subway network has its charm. I've never been there, but by the pics, videos and so on that I've seen, NYC's subway seem very appealing. It's a huge network, old in general, it has its charm in a way that other networks don't. One of the things I'd like to do when I visit NYC some day is definitely ride the subway. It has history.

I have no idea where people are getting this image of New York as some gritty, rough-and-tumble-yet-somehow-insanely-influential street thug in city form, but the city is no longer like that AT ALL. In fact, many New Yorkers (myself included) somewhat lament what NY has become. In a word, it's become boring, relying on what it WAS to supplement for what it IS. For all the dirt, grime, danger, etc. that New York had, it was FUN. At least you felt alive, that is, until someone caused your death.

That last sentence was only a joke...slightly.
Kind of agree, especially Manhattan and areas of Brooklyn closest to it. Manhattan feels like it's dominated by high earning professionals, students, and lots of tourists. More and more shops are chains straight out of suburban shopping malls. Not a lot of diversity in fashion. Even "hipsters" dress more conservative (albeit in a stylish way) than average people now. Brooklyn is a bit better, but the areas closest to Manhattan, like Williamsburg, have been getting more and more of the boring, conservative young professionals and rich kids. They're not known for creating artistic things, they just have tons of money to drive up rent.

Good:
+ Loads of opportunity in terms of careers
+ Different areas to choose from
+ Diverse in terms of race/ethnicity and geography
+ Openness of people in terms of views

Bad:
- Many areas are spread out and you need a car to get around which isolates social interaction
- Hard to interact with people here because they think you're a rapist/murder/serial killer
- Massive superiority complex
- Spending habits of Americans are out of wack and take too many things for granted
- Too work-oriented
- Not laid back and too uptight
- Annoying aspects of society

America hates itself actually. America is also quite schizoid, politicallly, socially. It's just never frankly discussed but gibber-jabbered at by experts who are paid to keep the IV feed flowing.

America will be forced sooner than later to deal with it's fractured sense of self. What was cohesive just 20 years ago is evidently not keeping the stitches together today. You can expect a wider divide between rich & poor just as you do elsewhere (and yes, I think Europe will be facing the same fate.) Why? Too many people have grown up believing in what is unattainable, what is unfeasible. I do believe that socially, what was once tabu will be allowed to a certain point, but fiscally... Well, living within one's means might do the soul some good and America's 'soul' needs a good long sit-down with itself without medication to sort itself out.

Myself, I have always been enchanted by the American screech of "We're #1" and I was born here! It was so youthful and innocent and in many ways true. But no more. If anything, Americans became enamored by their own excess to the point where they disliked what allowed them to proclaim so proudly. And the way they kept others from being just as haughty created a cultural war that will still reverberate for decades, leading, I think, to a cantonal division along cultural, racial/ethnic and financial divides. Truly, we sort of have that thing going as is, so it really follows that geographically the same will occur within the next 10-15 years. I don't think that is such a bad thing if done in a Swiss manner though it will be a forcible sort of EU thing for sure, which IMHO cannot work with so much diversity in play, assimilation notwithstanding. With all of this scathing politico-rhetorical drama being emphasized everyday... maybe it is purposely being done to keep tired out the inchoate reactions of the bewildered who feel cut-out? Betrayed?

At any rate, people will always have harsh feelings for an empire that has proven meddlesome, quarrelsome and flippant in regards to people, both within and without it's geographical borders. You may as well ask why Americans hate Iranians since the only thing Americans now about Iran is what is broadcast as propaganda (Yes, propaganda is a Holy American National Past-Time, too. Really.) daily thru all the media. Or 'socialism'. Of course, most Americans, 'educated' in text-memorizing, rhetoric-dispensing diploma-mills or not, have no real clue that we are now a 'free'-market corporatist state with benign totalitarian leanings and not the free-market capitalist state of yesteryear, despite the media-harpies' proclaimations otherwise, again-and-again, over-and-over, daily.

If you are an American, why do you believe America is so disliked? You know about envy, certainly. You must know people will always find something to spew vitriol over.

I wasn't talking about Europe in that example- I mentioned Israel. The us is held to a higher standard bc we tell everyone we're the land of equality but really we're not. It even says it in our constitution yet I fail to see the equality that they mention. Women are still not equal to men today in the us.

To be fair, I don't think there is any country in the world with perfect equality for its citizens. When it comes to women's rights, the US is among the most advanced in the world. In Switzerland women didn't have the right to vote until the late 1980s/1990 in some cantons, just to put it in perspective.

Appealing? NYC's subway is a grim utility. Moscow's subway system is a work of fine art. End of subway discussion.
