If you have traveled or even emigrated to another country, what has been your experience? How were you able to do this? What country or countries do you prefer? How did your friends and family feel about you living outside of the U.S. What is your quality of life like, and how have you been treated by people in other counties on their home turf. How long did it take you to make such a move from the time you decided to move to actually living in another country. Any info would be appreciated.

I do notice black women over here in Japan/Korea. They seem to like it.

Sorry, as I'm not a black woman, so I won't adequately be able to answer. But, I like the question, and hope to hear the responses.

Rep point for the question though.

Thanks for responding. Did the women in Japan/Korea tell you anything about what they liked about the countries, or what led them to move there?

I didn't meet the ones that the poster above mentioned.

I mostly met English Teachers who were African-American. I think they just enjoyed the cultural experiences. I think they basically came to experience another country, and taught English in the process.

If you're curious about potential racism/discrimination. Usually what I hear most, is that having grown up in the U.S., they're already familiar with being a minority, etc. So, the transition abroad, they don't suffer from the same majority-into-minority that others who've always been a majority might experience.

That being said, I think they do hear some stereotypes, but from the sounds of it, it's just lack-of-exposure, as opposed to hardcore cemented beliefs, etc.

Hope that helps a bit. Maybe there'll be someone more qualified to answer later. But, for the sake of giving you a few answers, thought I'd throw those out there.

I was in China with a colleague who was an African-American woman. She was treated very nicely by everyone we met personally. When walking with her in the street, quite often she was stopped by locals who had never seen a black woman and several times they wanted to take a photo of her together with them. She is always agreed but she didn't like this extra/movie star style attention.

In Russia it's great to be a single black man, but probably not as good for a woman. Although, passer-by's will rarely invade your personal space, as is common in China.

The last thing friends will use to judge you is a skin color.

The initial reaction will generally be much better than to white Americans.

I'm also not an African American woman but I've heard good things about Argentina! You'll stand out because there isn't a large black population there, but it is growing. My argentine friend tells me that they may stare but it's not to be rude, they're just curious . Plus if you're looking for a boyfriend or companion, Africans seem to get lucky in Argentina since they're rare/exotic (just pointing this out, not trying to offend anyone). Argentina is also cheaper than chile and brazil so it's worth a look. Good luck!
