When I say poor, I mean people poor enough to qualify for foodstamps and housing benefit, not working poor. This topic is on the welfare system, and we take care of our poor better than all countries outside of the West and Japan.
It is almost an injustice to describe what you have over there as a welfare system. Certainly way behind Europe and Australia.
Sadly though some of the Right in Europe, Cameroon for example, (UK)seem to want to go down the American path, at least in part.
They're viewed negatively in the US mainly because the view of welfare recipients was racialized. In countries with a more homogeneous population, welfare recipients aren't viewed as badly because there's not so much of a "them and us" attitude towards them.
Although in UK the right wing elements of the tabloid press do go on about the culture of entitlement and all that involves. But a lot is aimed at foreigners as well.

cameron hasnt dared to touch the NHS so i think its unfair to refer to his views on the wellfare state as amaericanised

You have not lived in the US and you are repeating the same "progressive tantrums" of crappy post-1968 pseudo-socialist politicians. The US spends far more in Healthcare and Welfare per capita that any European country. Certainly FAR more than Spain, France and England.
The problem in the US is different. Their Welfare System is based on Calvinist Principles (just like Switzerland) and not on Socialist or Fascist principles. According to them (and to the Swiss) every able person with resources should pay for health.
They also have two rackets they have not dealt with yet: Insurance Rackets and AMA. Why? Because those rackets have lobbies that are far more powerful than their lobbies in the EEC........and the concept they have about doctors... For Americans, a Doctor is somebody very special that earns millions, for us a doctor is just a regular professional a little above a specialized plumber. Here, a doctor is only important if he has studied abroad, has important research or owns a clinic.
But yes, "progressives" will keep repeating that the US..blah, blah....Fatso Michael Moore will wave his anti-American flag, local communist parties (yes, we have them) and their papers will repeat the same...and stupid voters will vote "progressive" political parties that are as corrupt as Third World politicians.

That is only because you are lumping healthcare and welfare together. America spends more per person in healthcare than any other nation, more, in fact that the welfare spending of the strong social network countries. Your average American pays more in tax for government health care than the average European.
As for the rest of welfare, the US spends roughly as much per person as Italy does.

I rather like Michael Moore as he rattles the Cons to such a degree. I would think most informed folk would be aware America spends the most on its health system in the world. It is after a big country with a huge population. Shame it doesn't impact on the mediocre services at best so ,many Americans recieve.
For the world's richest nation to be so low on the life expectancy table goes towards saying a lot about the system.
Actually have spent time in America and like many other Europeans the health system was a reason not for considering a long stay.
Health standards based on wealth has no interest for me. Doctors earning millions well ther's part of your problem. Perhaps they should have considered careers as bankers if money was their focus?
On another Forum read of the countless Brits heading back to good old Blighty with age, often lost a partner,and with own health concerns and the system in America being as it is, as well as being lonely(often mentioned) throw themselves onto the mercy of the British NHS.
Most give positive accounts of their experience with NHS,as creakey as it may be.

There are many individuals who, while being employed, qualify for food stamps and housing assistance.
And no advanced nation does less for its poor than the US. If you've evidence to the contrary, I challenge you to present it.
That is £150 a week, are you sure? I am all for welfare and my many post about the poor reflect that but I only get around that much and I work. We only get £50 a week here.

it is true , the old age pension is 232 euro per week , 464 euro per week for a couple who are pensioners , thats the state pension , private pensions or public sector pensions are a different matter
