Hitting a child isnt a last resort, and if done, it is done in anger, when the parent cant cope or is losing it... theres no excuse, a child cant defend itself and its pitiful to watch.. school teachers who strapped kids for not being able to do lessons or being late were pathetic perverted morons, who got some sad thrill out of knocking hell out of a child in their care... how that was allowed is beyond me..

We had one teacher who would give us the belt for getting below a certain number on a test.

There was another teacher who would spit as he talked. Not deliberately but even so. So one of the kids opened his umbrella in class. He got belted for that.

The belting started when we were around 7 and only ended when we the teachers began to feel physically threatened by us. In one case, a teacher was warned his kids would get hurt if he insisted on belting one of us (not me). Violence so often begets violence.

As you know yourself, that was the norm in Scotland at the time.

What year are you talking about?

( Because I can't imagine that anything like that would have taken place in the Soviet Union...)

I see. By that time in Russia "all boys schools" were long gone and although our teachers were yelling at us on top of their lungs, I can't imagine anything like that happening in Soviet schools. Punishment/decisions were left up to parents and each family individually. (Teachers however had great authority.)

If i were on the scene,I would say to that woman that you did a good job hitting your child.(don't get me wrong.I try to calm her and not be offensive.)
And i would say,my mom used to beat me but not enough. Thus i became so today. That's all her fault. But the thing is she never told me where i did wrong and how to fix it.All she knew was to resort to violence. Therefore i was holding a grudge against her and never listened to a single word came from her mouth.(At this point, the problem be solved)

The problem with it is that now EVERYTHING came under one umbrella. Light pat on the wrist or butt, and severe beating with internal damages and broken bones. (Sexual abuse is here off topic - we are discussing children hit by parents).
Its almost the same with nudity and porn. Most people don't know the difference either.

Now, everyone get excited about physical abuse, but not many mention mental abuse and how to prevent it. Many kids are mentally abused, but since those wounds are not visible, laws are not passed.
Mentally abused kids heal very slow, often never.....

Any abuse towards a child of any age just isnt on.. if we hit someone in the street we would be up in front of the courts , but its fine it seems for some to knock hell out of a small person. because theyve either brought them up wrong, their drunk. evil , or cant brainwash the child to do their bidding.. sickos is all they are, even to want to hit a child.

In at least late SU teachers couldn't even put the misbehaving kid out of the classroom (by law, but it wasn't followed religiously). There was a turnaround, though - "asking" to go to the principal and tell him/her that you've been asked to go to the principal for behaving badly

Kids didn't know that you didn't have to obey teachers. Today some kids do and abuse it - until their parents teach them a lesson or two

In Scotland as Jaggy said up until the 70s belting children was the norm by some teachers. usually silly wee things like forgetting a homework jotter, being late or not doing work well. now didnt some of these teachers look at the big picture and try and work out why these kids had either no homework done, forgot books or jotters etc. maybe they were from lousy households and parents who didnt bother to help the kids , or were too busy or too drunk.. I used to noticed at school that the poorer kids with the scruffy dirty looking clothes didnnt do as well in general as the posher kids.. so surely a teacher with some intelligence could see that these children werent being nurtured in any shape of form, and that the belt was all they needed ... What does a very sore whack over the hands sometimes the wrists do.... inflicts severe pain on a minor, causing hurt, resentment, anger and a rebellious streak... it was never right and never helped anyone. I can remember from back in the 50s a boy about nine.. Duncan Scott.. as soft silly sort of boy..who was always smiling, and when he d get the belt for his bad work or being unable to do it.. the teacher would get more angry as he kept smiling and belt him many more times.. it was pathetic, and only showed her perversion and anger that in her eyes he couldnt be broken..
