since you guys are well traveled, I would hope you know

lets say you were to pick out of 300 million Americans and the hundreds and millions of Western Europeans, collect 100 people from both groups, which of the two groups would generally have the more shallow, superficial, and materialistic people?

I have no idea. haha I guess I'll say American since we tend to own more material things, have bigger homes, etc, but there's no doubt Europe has a materialistic culture too, like Gucci and Prada and all those companies there.

Tough call. I think Americans are more shallow and that we want and have many things. Like cars, houses, electrionics, etc. However, Europeans are more shallow in regards to looks. How they dress and their fashion sense (which I deeply respect) also means that they put a big emphasis on looks.

I say Americans though. I don't think there is anything wrong about dressing and looking nice. Americans always want more, more and more.

If given just a bit of time, the Americans would influence the Western Europeans to become more shallow and materialistic but of course they wouldn't be as good at it as the Americans.

This is a ridiculous thread. A shallow outlook is an individual character trait. You can't generalize such a thing by entire swaths of world populations.

I wouldn't put it this way - "Americans vs. Europeans," but American culture in general is definitely more shallow than European culture. American culture is BUILT on money-making and "marketing" - what else can be said?

I think it (American culture) is just "younger". The US and the Americas in general are building their cultures it's going to take more than a few hundred years to build and develop a culture.. I agree that shallowness is an individual trait. Americans are perhaps quicker to express their naivete than Europeans but to be naive is not a sin.

Americans, because they are ruled by money. They work longer, they work harder, they suffer, their health suffer, family life suffer, vacation time is short, they are rushing through life ... and all that to have more things, live in bigger houses, drive the biggest cars, buy the newest gadgets, keep up with Jones. Impress the world. Pretty shallow, no?
