Everybody obviously has their own sense of style and what they think is appropriate and such, so I'm probably the only one in the pool wearing BDU shorts! At least I'm original!

Hmmm...why do fat, 50+ year-old European guys wear Speedos?

I thought it originated with surfer fashion. There are board shorts for women, too, with bikini tops. Men can always shorten the legs on their swim shorts, if they feel they're uncomfortably long.

The last time I checked, only older males in Europe wore speedos. All the younger males are following the American fashion.

It's very important, because banana hammocks don't do anyone any favours.

Nah, it may depend on the region but I have been to Italy 5 times and 80% of the men wear speedos.

In fact on my most recent vacation a couple weeks ago one of my Italian friends had a testicle hanging out -- I didn't tell him as it occurred to me it would likely not bother him.

It's just that the fashions are different in North America! You can analyze why they are, but that's really what it comes down to - fashion. People wear long shorts because that's what's cool and no one wants to be the dork wearing the swim suit type that went out of fashion in NA thirty years ago. Same reason guys stopped wearing parachute pants. I could see it change back if someone or something started a trend that made smaller suits cool again. Skinny jeans came in, so I could see it happening some day.

In Latin America, Southern Europe and the Middle East short shorts rather than speedos or boardies are favoured. Northern Europeans including Brits often wear boardies.

I don't know why they do, but most of the time I'm thankful... One could only hope the trend would catch on elsewhere...

*hint* I can't wear speedos.

There is a happy medium between speedos and what would be best called capris.
