I’ve never being, however have done lots of research into it, from what I gather you will only ever see the very best parts of the country on the tour, you will hardly ever see any normal North Koreans going about their daily lives as a tourist.
You can get a taste of what it might be like on the DMZ tour from the south, restrictions on what you can wear, lining up like school children, constantly being told what you can and cannot do, where you can or cannot look etc etc. A whole week of it would drive me nuts I think.
Interesting that this was asked. For the past month, i was thinking about trying to visit N.Korea in the next few years. I'm not certain how strict it will be for U.S citizens to get a visa there. It might be more difficult for me considering i was born in S.Korea too...lol.....I believe there are many tours that start from Beijing to N. Korea. From what i've read, tours to N.Korea have grown quite a bit in the past 2-3 yrs. Here is a video of a guy on a tour. I liked the simple narration during his visit....funny how he mentioned that there seemed to be more tension at the DMZ from the S.Korean vs. N.Korean side . He had previously taken a tour from the S.Korean side....some interesting moments too..
No, it isn't. Their only purpose is to scour the countryside and find the absolutely worst situations they can portray. It is the most slanted form of journalism, and I wouldn't be surprised if they staged a lot of what they show.
