Himeji castle during cherry blossom was probably the most stunning castle I've ever seen. The interior was rather mediocre, though.
The Catherine/Pushkin Palace in St. Petersburg was probably the most impressive European palace I've seen and probably the most impressive overall.
As for Austrian palaces: I never liked Schönbrunn. The colour of the building sucks. The palace grounds is what makes it pretty awesome, though. Overall I prefer the Hofburg and Belvedere in Vienna.
Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy is stunning and would have had my vote, whilst St Michael's Mount in Cornwall is also beautiful and Bamburgh Castlew on the Northumberland coast in England always looks amazing.
In terms of Buckingham Palace it's not really the best Palace even in the London area, that would surely go to Hampton Court, whilst the Tower of London is a famous castle itself, as is Edinburgh Castle in the Heart of Edinburgh.
Hever Castle, because its close to where I grew up and it reminds me of my childhood when I visit.
I should imagine Highclere Castle in Hampshire which was used in Downton Abbey and Alnwick Castle in Northumberland which was used in the Harry Potter films are both well known in terms of worldwide audiences, even if viewers don't know exactly where they are.
In terms of Bamburgh Castle it has featured in a number of films including Ivanhoe (1952), El Cid (1961) (with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), and Elizabeth (1998) - Raby Castle another beautiful Castle further down the country in Co Durham also appearing in Elizabeth.
Wow Bamburgh Castle looks great. Need to pay a visit sometime. My favourite in the UK in probably Bodiam Castle in Sussex. Looks like a typical, romantic, medieval castle complete with moat, but in actual fact is more of a stately home as its defences were not that strong.
Schloss Neuschwanstein shouldn't be on that list. An insult towards the real castles/palaces. It's like adding that Quebec City hotel/palace whatever it is.
My personal favorite is the Palace of Westminster:
