We often talk about which countries are the most advanced, have the top cities or the most modern amenities. On the opposite extreme, are there any countries left today that have very little of what we would call modern influence? Which countries make you feel like you stepped back in time hundreds of years?

Yes, Bhutan is one. Also Papua New Guinea, Mauritania, and Sao Tome and Principe. There are also many distinct societies in this world that are like stepping back in time that are not independent countries. The Buddhist region of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, would be an example, as would be many of the isolated Amerindian societies in the deep Amazon, and then there is of course Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean which has a human population on it that is at least 50 thousand years old that no outsider has ever contacted as they murder anyone who tries to talk to them. Even Marco Polo wasn't successful at communicating with them when he tried centuries ago.

And maybe not a hundred years, but a place like North Korea can make it feel like it is 1950 Soviet Union (never been there, just assuming). Turkmenistan and Tajikistan seem to be stuck in 1970, and going backwards more each year, I guess having a cell phone would contradict that, but speaking of general infrastructure and society.
There are little spots of people that live with little modern influence, though they are aware of it. Travel deep into Central Asia and a person can come across these people, and for a little more modern, like 1950's, many people in the world live like that.

Some of the African nations, like Mali, seem to fit the bill as well. Many African countries of course have certain groups that eschew a modern lifestyle.

Yeah I don't think having a cell phone necessarily means they truly live a 'modern life'. You could give cavemen cell phones but they would still be cavemen.

As someone who's spent two months in Bhutan. I can say that it is certainly NOT one. it is unbelievable how quickly that country is changing.

The people of Sentinel Island are fascinating ---hey are believed to be the last pre-Neolithic tribe in the world to remain isolated. I had no idea they existed. Thanks for bringing them up.
I looked them up and it said that in 2006 they killed some fishermen who were fishing too close to their island. And they attacked the helicopter that came to retrieve the bodies with a flurry of arrows -- the bodies are still there.
