I was fooling around on Google maps, and saw many large rust colored patches in central Ireland west of Dublin. What are these?

The Republic of Ireland is not in the U.K. Wrong forum.

Sorry, you are correct of course. I will ask a mod to move it to world but if anyone living *near* the Republic of Ireland knows, maybe they'll answer.

Well.. you got me interested so I had a look and after doing a little research the best I can come up with is that they're Peat Bogs in various stages of cultivation hence the different colours. They fit the aeas where I have been able to ascertain that Peat production takes place and the 'ploughed' lines and 'smoother' areas where they have been left fallow seems to fit. In some parts of Ireland this is farmed on a vast scale for use in agriculture and as a source of fuel.

Peat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is pretty much a semi-intelligent and half-researched guess though so I may well be completely wrong.

Thank you! It was a very odd-looking thing to see, and my googling didn't turn up anything.

Its bogs in the midlands. Offaly is famous for them. Check up Bord na Móna. You can also check up Offaly and Kildare bogs and that will tell you where they are.

P.s Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK.

What, you established that the area is Offaly and Kildare and that you will get information on it on the Bord na Mona site? So why didn't you say any of that if you established it?
