This is a city that I'm connected with in a number of ways.

What do you know about this city and what are your impressions of it?

As someone from India itself, Kolkata strikes me as a city past it's best days. In terms of influence and power, Kolkata has been overtaken in the past 50 years by Mumbai and Delhi. Otherwise, a place with lots of poverty, but also lots of culture.

1) Football culture. Mohun bagan, east bengal, mohammedan sporting matches I grew up while watching them on TV.
2) city with lot of history- victoria memorial, howrah station, museum, writer building.
3) educational institutes- presidency college, St Xaviers college, IIM Joka
4)China town, trams, metro.
5) Hilsa Fish

Calcutta needs a good airport with more international flights operating there. More IT and manufacturing industries should come up there.

Not a lot really. The only things which come to mind are Mother Theresa, slums, poverty. Off course there must be a lot more to Calcutta, but that's basically it.

Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind when "Calcutta" is mentioned is teeming slums full of poverty and Mother Teresa.

Yeah, unfortunately this is the image so many people have of the city. It's true but also very incomplete. There's a lot to the city that is notable and unique. I'll try to post some pictures if the mods don't delete them. :-)

The question was 'What do people around the world think of Kolkata'.

That is what people think of Kolkata. And India in general. There is no further insight to such an obvious question.
