Though some Jewish people have darker skin and tan well, some of the palest people I've ever seen have been Ashkenazi Jews. In fact redheadedness was associated with Jewishness in some times and places.

Do you think overall their genetic makeup is more Middle Eastern or native to Europe?

Ashkenazi Jews are genetically close to southern Italians, which might be a combination of two things;

1) When Jews were expelled from Palestine, a significant number of them ended up in central and southern Italy, then Roman controlled. Before moving north into the rest of Europe, they picked up converts that contributed to the gene pool, diluting the Hebrew gene pool and making it more "Italian".

2) Southern Italians themselves have a degree of genetic affinity to West Asia, due to Neolithic migrations, Phoenicians etc. Thus they, as periphery Europeans, will be similar genetically to some Jews.

You cannot come to a conclusion that Ashkenazi Jews are purely and simply Eastern European or European at all simply by their "looks".

I don't really think Jews look like Italians or Greeks. They look like Jews, a distinct group.

Also remember there are many, many Arabs in Lebanon, Jordan, Palestinian Territories and even Syria that have blonde hair, blue eyes, and very pale skin.

The Middle East is darker complexioned today than in classical times before the rise of Islam. Islam spread to Africa and South Asia and the genes from those people who converted came back to the Middle East and changed the look of most Middle Eastern populations. That's why you see many people who look somewhat African and like people from the Indian subcontinent in the Arab world today. DNA testing has shown this to be true.

The Lebanese are closer to the original look of Middle Eastern people, as are the Jews. DNA testing of Jews shows that both Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews have substantial Middle Eastern DNA. For example, Barbara Walters, who is Ashkenazi, had her DNA tested on the PBS show "Finding Your Roots" hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Her test results were 90% Middle Eastern and 10% European DNA.

Many southern Europeans also show substantial Middle Eastern DNA when they are tested.

Ed Miliband. Could pass for southern European or maybe lighter skinned Middle Eastern (some Turks or Lebanese). More by features than skin color, since he's not that dark.

If by Asia you mean China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea and Japan, well they don't have much in common. I find it much easier to link them with Eastern Europe, Russia, and Turkey, as well with the Levant and the fertile crescent. Even India has some ties, but this can be said for all Indo-European and Semitic cultural groups.

Typical Jewish traits are dark skin, curly black hair, large hook-noses, thick lips, dark-colored beady eyes and wearing kippah. Yet most Jews I have encounted don't fit in that category. Some Jews look like Italians and Greeks, others can look German or even Chinese.

This is about right, with the caveat that Ashkenazi seem to be a hybrid population made up of a mixture of Near Easterners on the paternal side, and Italians on the maternal side. As in, their Y chromosomes are Levantine, but their mitochondria are Southern European. This isn't as odd as it seems, as Jewish matrilineage wasn't established until after the diaspora. The male side of the Ashkenazi population, IIRC, came from a very small source population (around 300 people) as well. Little interbreeding has happened since the founding event though.

Middle Eastern Jews are very similar genetically to other non-Muslim peoples from the Middle East, including Christian Lebanese, Druze, and Cypriots. Sephardics are kinda all over the place - they seem to be partially descended from Near Eastern Jews, and partially Ashkenazi, so you can't generalize.

However most American Jews I've seen do look more white than Middle Eastern, I've never mistakened a Jew for an Arab, Iranian, or Pakistani before, but I've mistakened a Jew for an Italian or Greek. I'm surprised to hear red hair was once associated with Jewishness. I've always associated it with being Irish.
Funny though, because there are Arab Jews, Iranian Jews, & Pakistani Jews.
