No, area-wise Jacksonville is much larger. LA is some 400 square miles.

Not even close. Los Angeles spans a total of 503 miles to Jacksonville's 875 miles.

City limits are arbitrary. Jacksonville's city limits cover it's entire metro. LA's city limits only a fraction of the vast greater LA metro area.

Anchorage, AK, is 1,961 sq. miles! Though you probably meant the lower 48.

Jacksonville, Oklahoma City, Houston, Phoenix, and Nashville are all larger than Los Angeles in land area.

And yes, many of those cities owe their large populations to their massive land area, these cities are not very dense but immensely spread out, unlike their east coast and midwest counterparts.

We can compare the land area of Nashville (which is a consolidated city-county like Jacksonville and Anchorage) with the land area of Boston as they have comparable populations:

Nashville:
601,222 - 504 sq. mi. - 1,193 people per sq. mi.

Boston:
617,594 - 48 sq. mi. - 12,752 people per sq. mi.

I love factoids such as New York City by itself has a greater population than all but the three most populous metro areas in the US (NY, LA, and Chicago).

Okay well not entire metro, but a significant portion. Just wanted to point out that many foreigner's are unaware that metro doesn't equal city in the US. Obviously, LA's metro dwarfs JAX's in both area and population, which is possibly why owenc was surprised when it was mentioned JAX was bigger than LA.
