A lot of soccer players being mentioned. I honestly didn't know who some of them were. I guess that's a testament to how far behind the US lags the rest of the world in embracing the sport.

I ran across some articles detailing why Soccer isn't popular here. I learned some very interesting things. One author suggested that Americans view soccer as too sisyphean and that laboring on the field for hours to score maybe one goal doesn't line up with the American work ethic. Another guy posed that Americans are totally turned off by flopping (obviously faking an injury to try to get a foul called against the other team). We just see it as overly dramatic, whiny and dishonest.

Anyway, regardless of all that, soccer is the most popular sport in the world. So while I may barely know who Cristiano Ronaldo is, I don't doubt that he is a contender.
