I agree NYC isn't the perfect city. I still think it's amazing, but I think I got caught up in how 'famous' it was. It felt like being in a movie or something. In terms of big city buzz it's not alone.

I might still go for a working holiday in Canada next year. Ideally I'd spend 6 months in BC, in Vancouver or one of the ski resorts, and 6 months somewhere in the Maritime provinces, maybe Halifax. Have you been to the Maritimes?

I've lived in Perth my whole life so am really keen for a change. Who knows, I might be in Canada this time next year.
That is true Portland and Melbourne are in cities and are intriguing cities with plenty to offer for a high quality of life.

Melbourne is recently rated as the most livable city in the world, and that sounds like a valuable status to have.

Is that friend of yours that moved to Portland from Perth, Sydney, or Melbourne? If your friend wants to move to Canada, I assume it probably is for Vancouver or Montreal. However, the Pacific Northwest Washington state/Oregon is the most Canadian feeling area of the USA.

Did you change your mind about Copenhagen Denmark? A few months ago, you said Copenhagen was the place you considered the most for the 6 months to 1 year working holiday.

Vancouver British Columbia Canada is still an excellent option for living there 6 months to 1 year. There is plenty of excellent possibilities all over the world.

However, I think you should skip the Maritimes/Far Eastern Canada: Nova Scotia/New Brunswick/Newfoundland because that area just does not offer enough for international visitors that are traveling from very far away.

I visited Canada 4 times. (I also visited 6 other countries). 3 times in Quebec and 1 time in British Columbia, mostly for Montreal, Vancouver, and British Columbia Cascades. I really enjoyed those areas of Canada and they are just as good as the best areas of the USA.

The Canadian Rockies, and Vancouver Island are the other best areas of Canada. That is true for Toronto too, but Toronto is honestly a bit disappointing compared to those other parts of Canada.

Tel Aviv feels like a much bigger city than its actual population.

If you're looking at the downtown core alone, then you can say Baton Rouge can be "underwhelming". Its downtown skyline is not that much more extensive than Charleston, West Virginia for example. However what some people don't understand is the spread out, suburban nature of many Southern cities. So this IS a large urban area with lots of urban offerings and urban issues too.

Very much agree with this, Maastricht is bustling for such a small place.

Most of the cities I've been in have seemed just as big as they are...a city of 500k feels like a a city of 500k and so on.

And as far as the size of the cities is concerned, it is at all controversial - to be considered a city with or without suburbs?

However, I have noticed that when the city center is large, the city itself looks bigger than it is. For example, Naples, Italy feels big because its city center is really big.
And vice versa - if the city center is relatively small, the city seems smaller than it really is, for example, Bratislava, Slovakia.
