but the leaders and elites take the money and then the regular locals try to grovel some coins out of them, rather than working or studying.
Yes, all; those high-paying jobs that require no training or experience, that remain unfilled because people would rather grovel. People who are literate and can buy books and pay the fees to attend school, but grovel instead.
There is a huge difference between "Anyone can come in out of the slums and get educated and get a good job" and "Everyone can come in out of the slums and get educated and get a good job".
Look at all the aid money that piles into some of these countries.
All the money comes in, yet nothing changes!
The rich buy a few new fancy cars then it's business as usual - and the people do nothing about it.
as I said, it's easier to try and get a handout than work and innovate - so that is what these countries do.
time to pull the aid plug and let nature take its course.
what goes in to those countries in the form of aid is pittance compared to what those countries loose by being subjected to unfavourable trade laws , african farmers are prevented from selling their produce on global markets so as to protect the incomes of farmers in north america and europe , its known as the CAP ( common agricultural policy ) , their are other sectors in which the same thing applies but everything begins with agriculture in developing countries , throwing aid at the third world is the cheaper option for the wealthy west , the west makes the rules when it comes to international trade though that has changed a little since the rise of china and india , its more convenient for you of course to simply brand the population as lazy and incompetant
i think aid is not the answer btw but no way will various vested interests in the west agree to a level playing field for workers - producers in developed and developing countries

well why should they anyway?
or do you actually want the West to become a 3rd World stinkhole as well - do you advocate a form of idealist international communism or something?
Most of the hillbilly peasants I come across are happy with a bag of rice and a new mobile phone - to each their own, but why should the white man have to shed any tears?

well at least you admit to being fine with the west having the complete upper hand but as a consequence you dont get to dismiss the developing world as a bunch of losers , you wont be taken seriously , your obnoxious and proud of it but thats all you are , no new insights or fresh perspectives here
I'm a bit torn on this topic, as there are a mix or really good, good, bad, and really bad people in every corner of the world. Why do we have gangs, mafia, drug lords etc around the world? Because there are a mix of people.
I know there is much worse poverty than I have experienced, but life in Russia (Siberia) in the 1990s sucked , as well as the slums in South America I now know. MOST of the people there are good, but these are also the homes of the worst things...Murder, drugs, disrespet, and people using others. I knew good people just trying to get by that unfortunately got into the fringes of the bad people and are now dead. They were good people, but getting desparate.
In our day to day life, of course most of us forget how bad large portions of the world are. I also believe the poor in the developed world have a much greater chance of a decent life, but they need to break out of their environment...which isn't easy.
Given that developed countries are so much richer and have such a higher standard of living compared to most of the world, do you think that those of us who live in them are either born with silver spoons in our mouths or live sheltered lives far different from the reality of the great mass of humanity that has ever existed?
No, not really. Most developed countries have poor people and homeless so people have an idea of what poverty looks like.
There are poor and there are very poor people. Most people in this world fit in the first category and their lives are really not that different from ours. They eat enough and they can afford some sort of entertainment once in a while.
I bet most Americans if they were forced to live in poor countries in a poor neighborhood, they would eventually get used to not having so many luxuries. It's like in Gone in the Wind.
It is poor relatively speaking. I know people on incomes of less than £10,000 ($16,012) a year who have big screen TV's, broadband internet, Sky subscription - the lot. They do not claim benefits either, they can genuinely afford all of this. Poor in a developed country is not poor at all, it's just poor relative to the average in that country.
