It is exactly like France, only tropical. There are no budget accommodations, so don't plan to stop there if you are a backpacker. The island is very beautiful, spectacular scenery, and I found the people quite pleasant, they are friendly and hospitable, and rather surprised to see any casual visitors. We just added it as a stopover on our flight from Madagascar to Mauritius. A woman from the Air France desk at the airport took us home and gave us a place to sleep, a nice villa around on the opposite side of the island.
However, the population has doubled since I was there (1976), with a large influx of people of non-European ancestry, and tourism is now listed as a major industry, so my impressions above are probably no longer valid.
