No offense, but why do you base your opinions off of what people do on this forum? A lot of people don't even represent an "average" thought for a lot of countries. Some do, some are informed, many are misinformed. You put too much weight into this. Get out and meet people from the country, travel to the country itself instead of basing your opinions on what some random people said on an internet forum.
I ve lived in the country for six months, know many people from there with whom i exchange e mails in weekly basis, some of them have come visit me and i came there visit them too. Read a lot of american literature (and studying the origins of the american dream type of mind was a part of my thesis in literature degree) and watched a lot of tv series and movies to know how intrincated the "america is the freest country in the world" speech is into the society.
Maybe you should go to San Francisco...or New York. They seem to be really cool cities, multicultural, a lot of people from all over the world living there, wich is always a plus.
just wondering because the south is very affordable and still some pretty cool cities like Atlanta and Houston.
for the north i would check out Washington DC, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, those are all great cities with big universities.
