Montreal Metro had 2,743,208 people in 1971, and 2,862,286 in 1981. Still small, but not that small.
Montreal was one of the smaller metros to host the Olympics--and unfortunately it had some problems hosting the Summer Olympics--the city nearly went bankrupt and it took 30 years to completely pay off all debts related to the huge Olympic Stadium they constructed...
Where are they going to build all those huge stadiums? Are they going to pave over Central Park?
Well some of the boros have places- example Queens has a tennis center, Long island has Nassau Coliseum (ice arena), Brooklyn has Barclays center... not all the events would be concentrated just in Manhattan. I just envision the crowds and traffic being a nightmare. Traffic is already a nightmare in this area.

I know all about it, I'm a Montrealer. I was just saying it didn't have less than 2 million in its Metro at the time, but of course it was one of the smaller cities to host.

Anyway...didn't Antwerp once host it? That was years ago. Now the Olympics are a lot bigger. If you look at every city that has hosted it since let's say, Moscow in 1980, all have had metros of over 3 million at the time of their hosting it. Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens were the smallest, with around 3-4 million at the time they hosted it. I can't imagine a city with less than 2 million putting up a bid. Most cities that size just don't have the funds for it either.
