I would say Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Spanish, and the folk music of Canada's Maritime region are among my favourites.

And? The questions not about popularity.

Yes. Scottish folk music is probably more popular in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland, than it is in Scotland.

I immediately thought of these guys and it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with many others...

I really like European accordian music from about 1830-1930, I've found a fair amount from France and Germany, and some from the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, and of course all the polka music that made it to America. But I'd like to find more and prefer original recordings from back in the day (not modern groups playing it).

Oh, and the stuff they call Italian folk (mostly from Napoli, uses some accordians and mandolins with vocals, more like pop than folk to my ears).

But much of it has strong, catchy melodies and sounds completely European and not at all American (which is refreshing).

If any esoteric listeners can recommend specific CDs, artists, tracks... I'm all ears.
