On the other hand, if you say anything negative about the US, there are always a bunch of Americans calling you jealous, attacking your country over something completely non-related, and going on and on about how the US is still better than other countries. People say nice things about the US all the time without getting bashed. The Europe forum is littered with threads making us all out to be white supremacists yet I don't see any Europeans making threads like this.

Obviously, if you say something negative about a country with malicious intent, citizens of that country will come to defend.

I'm talking about the phenomenon where if you say something nice about the US, you then randomly receive unrelated bashing comments. I agree with the OP that this shows signs of insecurity.

Canadians are also preoccupied with America because most of us live within 100 miles of the border, and our moves and television are primarily American.
Not only our largest trading partner, but for the things we REALLY need (FOOD!) our most important.

I think that big fame of frenchs of being rude is undeserved and, annerk, you probably got unlucky.

Now, the Romans...thats another story! Those peoples were rude and unwelcoming like no other!
I found the Italians to be aloof but not rude. They couldn't care less if we were there. Or if we weren't. Actually the aloofness was rather amusing to me. We did meet some pretty warm Italians as well--particularly younger people in Rome who wanted to practice their English with us. I asked one guy if he had studied in the US because his English wasn't just good, but he had a decent accent and the right slang. His response? "Seinfeld." I almost died laughing.

LOL, this is SO untrue! I ve said millon of times how USA haves the most amazing tv shows ever, praised their tv, their movies, their writers, their amazing sense of humour, etc, and NEVER got bashed. But when someone says a tiny criticism about the US, they get call "jealous, insecure," etc

You got it all so backwards its amazing.

And actually, the only thing we all seem to agree on (even americans) is that americans seem to have all this crazy uber chauvinistic people that create THIS type of threads, while people from other countries dont.

That we all agree on, And this type of threads prove it. And OF COURSE the ignorance and uber-chauvinism is gonna **** people off, and OF COURSE a thread with this title is gonna **** people off, its just plain made to provoque people from other nationalities.

Imagine if i made a thread that said "Argentina is the best country in the world and everyone else is jealous", well, of course thats so unthinkable because its completely unlikely someone would write something that ridiculous . But imagine if a french person or canadian person wrote a thread like this, or wrote a thread that said "why is everyone jealous about Paris being the best city in the world". Wouldnt THAT gat many haters??. Think about it for a second and you would get it.

So, in any case you should be writing a book about fellow americans like the one who created this thread. What on earth were they thinking??

I don't think that is obvious at all. If someone were to criticise my country over something that is justified, I don't feel the need to "defend" my country at all. The problem is that some Americans seem to consider any negative opinion about their country as a personal attack. They desperately want their country to be seen as the greatest country in the world and will put down other countries in the process. That is a sign of insecurity to me. Why do you care so much what other nationalities think of your country? If someone is an obvious troll, why bother responding?

I've been called "anti-American" just for saying I don't like the American political system. It seems that some Americans are on the defensive all the time and just can't acknowledge that their country has flaws. The US is still a great country even if it isn't perfect.

I got bashed for saying I love American music, movies and fast food... but it was by Americans who said I was not appreciative of "real" American culture, lol.

To be fair, the OP doesn't usually strike me as an ultra chauvinistic person. He's just made a few 'off' posts lately, including this one

I wonder how the Americans on this forum would respond if someone made a thread called "Who has the most insecurities towards Europe?" The title implies that people have a reason to be insecure because their country (or continent) is inferior to ours. But actually, such a question would make a lot more sense because there really are Americans with genuine insecurities towards Europe. These are the (extreme) right-wingers who do not want their country to become like "socialist" or "liberal" or "atheist" Europe, so whenever there is a positive mention of, say, Sweden, they feel the need to downplay it so that it doesn't inspire the more moderate or left-leaning part of the population to want to become more like Sweden in some ways. Any praise of a socialist/liberal/atheist country is seen as a threat. I observe this all the time. For example, I guarantee you that if an American were to go to the Politics forum (where the extreme right-wingers reside) and simply started a thread about how much he admires the French culture and lifestyle, there will be more than a few people who will bring up high taxes, laziness, government hand-outs, etc. Such a thread would be seen as an inherent attack on American culture and lifestyle, even if you don't mention the US once.

I agree about your last point, Linda.

And, to be fair, i didnt see the OP as one of those crazy ultra chauvinist either, but if one thinks about the title of this post, it can only be done by a delusional ultra chauvinist, or someone that wanted to start a flame thread that would get attention. So maybe the OP just wanted attention and flame and he got it

Which thread would get more responses.....

"Argentina is the best country in the world and everyone else is jealous"

or

"The United States is the best country in the world and everyone else is jealous"

?

The Argentina one would be so ridiculous i dont think it will get much responses. Maybe 1 or 2 LOLs but thats it.
USA one got a lot of responses, as proven, and some of them are even serious ones, written by american chauvinistics that think that title actually makes sense
