Kpop still has a long way to go before really becoming globally popular. They do have a small niche of fans in Europe, S. America, and west coast of the U.S...there are some limited fans in other parts of the U.S. The main audience is obviously Asia. I believe Girls Generation was the only Kpop group to ever appear on a nationally popular American TV show like David Letterman and Regis/Kelly. They are the most popular group in S. Korea, yet they appeared on David's show for the first time only just last year, so there is still alot of work to be done if they really are targeting the U.S. The big obstacle is producing songs in English...not just bits here and there, but an ENTIRE song....still, they want to keep their Korean fans happy first and foremost. Until radio stations start playing Kpop songs, i don't see much of an impact at this time. I did hear some NYC clubs are playing limited songs on special nights.
I'm hearing that the big companies like JYP and YMC are trying to find more English speaking singers to bolster their new groups. I believe the trend is Asian American singers flocking to S. Korea. The singer Ailee posted her videos on Youtube and was eventually signed by YMC. It is a serious business with selected trainees going through rigorous training for dance, vocals, etiquette, and language(Korean). The trainees are together for a few years before their debut. The nine gals of Girls Generation have been living together at least for 6-7 yrs. I think that would drive alot of people nuts.
