Is it my understanding that winter tourism and retirement patterns in North America and Europe are oriented towards finding warmer spots more than is the case in South America and Australia? (Of course, I'm not talking about skiing and other winter sports.) For example, Canadians and northern Americans go to Florida and Arizona as well as Mexico and the Caribbean during the winter, and northern Europeans go to the Mediterranean during the winter, but South America and Australia don't have as many snowbelt or coldbelt-type regions as the other two areas mentioned, with many of the cities in those latter two regions that are cooler in the winter rarely having snow or below-freezing temperatures.

Actually, let me rephrase the question: How are the winter sun-seeking patterns among South Americans and Australians (from cooler areas such as Buenos Aires and Melbourne respectively) different than from North American (Canadians and northern Americans) and Northern European winter sun-seekers?

Are you asking if it's warmer to the north because we're south of the equator?

indonesia gets 931,109 australian tourists per year as of 2011
thailand gets 930,599 australian tourists per year as of 2012
malaysia gets 580,695 australian tourists per year as of 2010
singapore gets 956,039 australian tourists per year as of 2011
vietnam gets 289,844 australian tourists per year as of 2012
philippines gets 191,150 australian tourists per year as of 2012

for a nation of only 22 million, certainly seems like a lot of australians are travelling to warmer climates.

Which is strange considering that the entire northern third of their country is in the deep tropics. Though, considering that Cairns and Darwin aren't exactly very exciting cities compared to Singapore or Bangkok. So, it can't be just the weather because their own country has cities that have the same weather as SE Asia

true. was just pointing out that australians do clearly still travel to tropical places despite the warmer climate.

Cambodia - 117,729 Australian Tourists
Laos - 33,878 Australian Tourists

Interesting, thought Laos would get at least half of Cambodia's numbers.
Thai people always tell me Laos is nicer than Cambodia.

Russian Visitors (2011)
in Thailand: 1,054,187
in Philippines: 20,185

Thai visiting the Philippines (2011): 37,862
Filipino visiting in Thailand (2011): 268,375

Why does the Philippines not get more Western visitors?
A Christian country with the by far highest % of English speakers in Asia -East of India.
Beautiful beaches, top 3 country for mongering next to Thailand and Brazil.
