Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican holiday that is an American invention like Tex-Mex
I just had this conversation with a co-worker of mine who said when they first came to the U.S. that they could not understand why Cinco de Mayo was celebrated in the U.S.
Best regards, sincerely

Battle of Puebla
The Mexican victory is celebrated yearly on the fifth of May. Its celebration is regional in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is celebrated as El DÃa de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).
This holiday remains very popular in the United States where it is celebrated annually as Cinco de Mayo.

We do the same thing with Saint Patrick's Day. St. Patty's Day in Ireland is practically just another day, while here it's been blown out of proportion full of drunken mishaps. We have a habit of doing that, taking obscure days from other countries and turning it into a shadow of its former self lol
