Oh please, you're making it sound as if British and American English were two completely different languages. As long as you avoid slang and British humor (for probable lack of understanding on the Americans' part) it's not that big a deal.

There's drinking tea and there's drinking tea. The former is merely the consumption of a drink, the latter is a ritual entrenched in the British culture.
