America is home to 300 million people. We have more ignorant people than most countries have people.
While that might be true; the title of the thread includes the word "average". I think for the context of this thread we need only look at the average that would be applicable to those we of foreign countries might interact with. What other category would even be necessary to explore and for what reason?
I believe you then have to look at what would be seen as the "average" American by others.
Does that mean you take all 350 million and look for that median groupage? Cripes! Native or aboriginal included? Illegal aliens included? Immigration and refugee numbers included?
Throw in some southern states and you'd have to include some who haven't been anywhere further than their front porch where they keep the washer/dryer/refridgerator/freezer. Canada, for another example, has significant native population still living in the frigid north. Of what purpose would they need to know a wit about "spaghetti junction" of Manchester England?
I think you have to EXCLUDE all those folks in any country that just don't travel as you haven't and won't interact with them anyway. Now you've raised the mean average bar considerably.
I think the biggest thing about the studies that compare the US with the rest of the world in education is that they test the people who have taken that subject. In the US, they try to teach people as many subjects as they can, while elsewhere, there is more specialization earlier on, and only the specialized students count towards the population that is compared against the US. It is like trying say that because Usain Bolt can beat the world's best decathlete handily at the 100m dash, that the decathlete is bad at track and field.
I'm not American but Americans are often singled out for their ignorance - especially geography, history, current events.etc. At least from people I know, mostly online, I haven't found Americans any more or less ignorant than most nationalities. Honestly, there are plenty of ignorant people here in Australia.
Do you think there's any truth to the idea or is it anti-American propaganda?
Im not trying to be mean but from the stories about americans i would say yes because the nation singles all the other countries out ,i also think that because of all the celebrities and movies they all kind of think that theyre more advanced and privalidged
not stupid but ignorant? yes this would be true of anybody that thinks their parents r fools
