New Amsterdam (of New Holland) > New York (of the British Empire, of the USA).

Not so sure about Constantinople > Instanbul.

Some say that Constantinople (eastern Roman Empire) was referred to, in Greek, as The City, as in I'm going To The City, like when New Yorkers say I'm going To The City, they mean to Manhattan. In Greek εις την Πόλη > Instanbul (Ottoman Empire).

But others refute that etymology.

Saigon, South Vietnam -----> Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

But from what I understand, everybody there still calls it Saigon. Any residents care to clarify?
