Since quite a few people here mentioned Russian anthem - I think what makes it so distinct is that the roots of it go back not to Stalin's times ( although original words from what I remember even included his name,) but to classical Russian music - operas and things like that. This particular piece makes me think of the prototype of the Russian anthem; M. Glinka finale from opera "Life for Tzar" "Glory to Russian people."
( Yeah, Stalin liked to dig the folk theme in classical interpretation.)

Глинка. Жизнь за царя. Ð*пилог. - YouTube

Now American anthem makes me think about some kind of choral music, the first one ( from New Zealand) reminded me of a mix between American anthem and this particular song ,

Rod Stewart - Auld Lang Syne (Live at Stirling Castle) - YouTube

The French anthem obviously is based on their spirit and history, and German... German anthem reminds me of the Russian anthem, just with a twist)))

( I am not familiar with too many anthems, since I don't watch sports too often. So it would be nice to hear more of them here, just to get an idea.)

They stole their melody from us I have to admit that I'm a bit jealous.

Sung during the funeral of the last crown prince. A bit awkward considering that most of the people sang along while our preisdent was sitting in the front row...:

Kaiser Otto von Habsburg - Kaiserhymne - národní hymna - Himnusz a császár (mit Untertitel) - YouTube (with subtitles, if someone wants to compare the text to the one thats currently used by Germany.)

Good thread.......
Yeah, rugby is great, you get to have a neat cultural exchange centered around 30 large men beating the hell out of each other

South Africa is another one I admire. I also like the Danish Royal anthem because it mentions the King dicing people up on the battlefield, very Conan the Barbarian-ish.

In American television, the Olympic medal ceremonies are only shown if the gold is won by the USA. Otherwise, you rarely hear any other national anthems anymore.

French and Welsh.

Sad to relate, the British National Anthem is a dirge.

I prefer this;

I heard the Sri Lanka anthem the other day, sounds quite happy!

One of the middle eastern ones sounds like 'pop goes the weasel'.

So... then this is Austrian National Anthem?
Composed by... Mozart?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq1fp...cmlIQguRUoVuEU

And German one is written by Haydn?
I never knew that.

( Anyways, I see now what you are saying about "too slow," but.. it's still Mozart.
And you have beautiful country, ( just too small... )
As in "not enough of a good thing."
