Generally, I hate cities and avoid them like the plague when I travel abroad. Domestically, San Francisco is #1.
Internationally, St. Petersburg can't be beat. ...ok, well, maybe Vienna might come in 2nd. Maybe. Otherwise, they're all just too big and noisy, too trafficky, too overwhelming. Helsinki is an exception, being smaller and more quiet, relatively. But for sightseeing, St. Petersburg is tops.
What are your favorite cities in the world and why? What makes it stand out for you?
For the ones I have been too...
Large- Chicago: It is a beautiful city. There is no way I will ever leave this area.
Small- San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina: It was beautiful and the people I came across were nice. It had this amazing mix of Swiss, Italian, and Spanish influence (the latter two are a given being this is in Argentina). It was a cool vibe in a beautiful setting. I can hardly wait to go back...
lI don't really like cities very much, but I'll list one favorite fairly large city by continent:
North America -- St. John's, Newfoundland
South America -- Mendoza, Argentina
Europe -- Lisbon, Portugal
Africa -- Douala, Cameroun
Asia -- Hanoi, Vietnam
