It is an interesting thought. However why only Alaska? I think the Hawaiian Islands would be more interesting to be an independent country. They have a unique culture and I think that´s why Hawaii´s population is not so "Americanized". But I have never been there. It is only my assumption. The Republic of Hawaiian Islands. It does not sound bad, do you?
Never going to happen. The problem of states seceding was solved in 1865. They're not going to secede, period.

Sounds pretty bad to me. I much prefer the State of Hawaii, thank you very much. WOuld have been better as well if we had treated our other territories better and then they would be the State of Cuba and the State of the Philippines as well

Never going to happen? Are you 100 percent sure? I do not think so. I can imagine a scenario concerning separation of the Hawaiian Islands. I am not saying people living there want to secede, but you should not say "never going to happen". It is not wise.
There is a tiny pro-independence movement in Hawaii, but it's mostly supported by ethnic Hawaiians -- of whom there are not very many left (they comprise only 6% of the population).
The other people who support this effort are "birthers" who hope to prove that Obama (who was born in Hawaii) wasn't actually born in the U.S., since they claim that the annexation of Hawaii was illegal.
Yeah the Hawaiian islands should be its own country interesting idea.
Read the history of Hawaii. It was it's own sovereign country, a very democratic one under a benign monarchy, until the 1890s. American missionaries and plantation owners there figured out a way to make more money. The overthrew the monarchy, abolished elections, appointed their own leaders, then begged the US to take them over. The US did, and that is what happened to Hawaii as its own country.
I bet your school history books forgot to include that chapter.
This issue was settled between 1861-65 and it was decided that a state of the Union cannot secede, this was further reinforced by a US Supreme Court ruling in the early 1870s.
Even after Puerto Rico becomes a state the PIP will still exist - and still never get more than 3% of the vote. These fringe groups of kooks are irrelevant.

Political boundaries are never "solved". Why do some of you say this? Without getting into the whole thing, bare in mind that the number of states is not a constant. No US president has ever died under the same flag he was born under.
