English.

No offense to the speakers, I've attended the Dutch course in my uni for about a week and jesus it sounds really bad to me.
I don't like the way German sounds either, it's so harsh.

None taken. I voted for English too. I just don't find any of the Germanic languages sound good at all, including my own haha.

I can't imagine why anyone would like the sound of Dutch.

People who believe German language sounds harsh, have probably never heard any classical music in German.

That's why I ended up quitting the class. The teacher was awesome but yeah...I was totally turned off by the sound of it.

Why isn't Afrikaans listed as a poll choice? I probably would have clicked that, i's a cool-sounding language, when spoken by Vrystaat farmers.

I recall, when watching the movie "Insomnia", that I could tell whether the actors were speaking Swedish or Norwegian. It surprised me that it was so easy for me to distinguish them, without understanding any of either of them.

It's generally considered a dialect of Dutch.

Not for me. I like German. Dutch sounds like something awful is about to happen to someone. Like a Barbarian tribe is about to execute some of the people they've conquered.

I always thought that, to. But I Google-translated a sentence into Afrikaans, then translated that into Dutch, and almost every word was different. Mostly spelling differences, but I would assume significant differences in the sound of the spoken language, which is the topic of this thread. Just as English would sound very different in Jamaica than in Edinburgh. Or French in Senegal or Quebec. One might be pleasing to a foreigner's ear, and the other not.

To me, the Romance languages sound lovely to the ear. Much more so than any Germanic language. So I am not surprised that Germanic languages sound harsh to those people.
