Funny that Denmark and the UK must have truly sterling reputations, as neither country has ever been in the top ten on that HDI index, but both are on almost everyone's list. This year Denmark is 15th and the UK 27th. Two years back 16th and 28th respectively.

Before the economic crisis Iceland was 2nd at best, but haven't yet been mentioned once.

My top 10 would be (in no particular order):

Norway
Switzerland
Sweden
Denmark
Finland
Iceland
Netherlands
Austria
Canada
Australia

To be fair, there are other quality of life rankings which place both countries higher..

Sorry, but those rankings are laughable anyway... Show me one guy who notices a differences in development between Norway (Rank 1 on the HDI) and Denmark (Rank 15)...

Most North Western, Northern and Central European countries, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are all very highly developed countries with a well educated population and a "relatively" high standard of living.

Too small of a population to even consider. lol.
Norway has a larger population than Ireland or New Zealand, and within 10% of the population of Finland and Denmark. What exactly is your cutoff point for being "big enough"?

lol yourself.

Knowing what I do I think the US shouldn't be anywhere near the top 10. It's probably one of the worst developed countries for quality of life. High unemployment, high inequality, high poverty rate for a developed nation, large groups of depravation, often public education system, high crime rate, no universal health care, no old age pension for many (so I've just been told).

I would rank them, in no particular order:

Sweden
Norway
Denmark
Luxembourg
The Netherlands
Leichenstein
Australia
Germany
Canada
Japan

If this is based on the HDI, the list is old. Sweden at#10 and Germany #9..the first two that pop up on that site.

But the 2013 HDI says Sweden is # 7 and Germany # 5.

Sweden was dropped to 10th in that article because it's so socialist.

This reminds me of the 'what would cause a social stir in different regions' -thread.

"Finland was an integral part of the Axis, took an active part in the holocaust and Field Marshal Mannerheim was gay".
